Proposals
Three plans have been made public for airports on or near the Thames Estuary. None of them have been given approval and currently remain nothing more than proposals at this stage. But it is widely expected that the government consultation will include details of the proposals. They are:
1. Lord Foster and Halcrow’s jointly funded proposal. View the proposal here.
2. The Mayor of London’s plan for an island in the Thames estuary - dubbed by many as Boris island. Details on this are vague, but the plan would be to build a hub airport on a man made island in the estuary off the Kent and Essex coast. See the Kent Online story for more details.
3. Former Cathay Pacific executive John Olsen has also proposed an airport at Cliffe on the Hoo Peninsula. Details on this are also scant, but you can read more on This is London.

Comments
I feel the proposed new airport hub situated in the Thames Estuary would impact negatively on the environment and the well being of local residents. The biggest concern is the loss of natural habitats, homes to wildlife. The second is the increase in building and air/road traffic. If this plan was to go through it would obviously be an irreversible decision with the shape and nature of the area changing forever.
